Arthur Twining Hadley was born in New Haven, Connecticut on April 23, 1856. He graduated from Yale in 1876, and pursued graduate studies in political economy at the University of Berlin. Howard Roberts Lamar, historian of the trans-Mississippi West, was born in Tuskegee, Alabama in 1923. He received a B.A. from Emory University in 1944, and a Masters (1945) and Ph.d. (1951) in History from Yale University. He was an instructor at the University of Massachusetts and Wesleyan University between 1945 and 1949, and taught at Yale from 1949 to 1994.
